Yvonne and Scott Spurlin

"I don’t want my pain and struggle to make me a victim.
I want my battle to make me someone else’s hero."

As a thriving survivor of many traumatic incidents, I understand the tremendous need for help in overcoming the negative effects of critical, life changing incidents.

As the child of a father who was part of a Search and Rescue team in Colorado, I encountered several incidents that left a lasting impression on me and birthed a vision to empower others to overcome devastating events.

When the OKC Bombing occurred in 1995, I was part of the National Organization for Victim Assistance debriefing efforts at Columbus Elementary School.

Living in Oklahoma City has given me many opportunities to assist in recovery efforts from the frequent tornadoes that  tear through our communities. There has been an increase in natural disasters around the globe.  Terrorism and violence has gained momentum, leaving in its wake traumatized lives and fragmented families. The economic impact that natural and man-made disasters have made around the world creates a far-reaching rippling stress factor.

Morton Bard, (Psychologist, Professor, one-time member of the New York Police Department and authority on Crime Victims) and Reverend Dawn Sangrey, believe that “Minutes of skillful support by any sensitive person immediately after the crime (crisis,) can be worth more than hours of professional counseling later.”  In other words, individuals who utilize crisis intervention skills can help people reconstruct their lives and reduce the need for longer term psychological intervention later.

Crisis comes in many forms and intensity levels and no one is exempt from crisis.  Whether it be a terminal illness, work-place disaster, vehicle accident, loss of income or natural disaster, everyone experiences crisis.

Crisis Intervention Services help people understand the how, what, why, who and when of the effects of a critical incident on their life which empowers them to process, navigate and recover easier and often faster.

We founded the Building For Life Crisis Response and Chaplain Team for the sole purpose of serving and empowering others to overcome the negative impact of traumatic, critical incidents.  We have diligently and purposefully trained and built a comprehensive, integrative, systematic and multi-component approach to helping others.
